AUGUST 1982

Columbus Pride Parade

Claims Success

Purple and orange balloons flew aside American flags as 2000 or more marchers participated in one of the largest political gatherings ever held in Ohio. Spirits were high as the demonstrators marched the 1-1/2 mile route that ended in a rally on the capitol grounds.

The Gay Olympic Torch held by Ken Goggin, 28 of Washington, led the parade. Close behind Goggin were three floats and various organizational representatives. One float, representing MCC, had the Rev. Rob on board waving to the crowd. Sponsored by the Liberation Party was a float of American flags. The Stonewall Union's float consisted of multicolored paper flowers forming the double male and double female symbols.

The police, who also led the parade, were very receptive and cooperative. The crowd ignored a few hecklers along the route. The Rev. Richard Dean, 57, of Columbus called the parade, "an abomination," from his vantage point at the fringe of Goodale Park, the lead-off point of the parade. Six of his followers countered the parade with the tired slogan, "repent." References to the Moral Majority were met by loud boos from gay on-lookers. The only

other cloud over the parade occurred when several people threw eggs at the participants. This was quickly stopped by the police who promptly smashed all the eggs.

The rally on the steps of the Statehouse was one of the final events for Gay Pride Week. The Lambda Men's Chorus sang as did the Labyris Women's Choral Group. Reception for the events was very positive and many of those in attendance remarked with hopes that the parade and coinciding events would go on to become an annual event for Ohio.

Apparently the parade had such a large turnout that coverage was given on all three of Columbus' major television stations, quite an achievement for the so-called "backward" Midwest.

Val Thogmartin, associate director of the Stonewall Union stated, "This is a show of gay pride. What we've seen here today is the first all-Ohio gay event. More a show of pride and an expression of our dignity as individuals than a demonstration."

In conclusion the parade was a huge success and we hope to see as much if not more of a response next year.
